The hadith is about not entering the mosque qith a foul smelling mouth. Eg with the smell of tobacco, garlic, onions etc. Also we can take this further that our body and clothes should smell clean as well. This is because it disturbs the other people present in the masjid whom we will stand next to in salaat as well as the angels. Thus we should avoid eating such stuff before the entering the masjid. As we know we make miswak and gargle during wudhu before we offer salaah or we recite the quran etc.
Now take this in a real life situation when a man kisses his wife or visa versa the foul smell would put you off, right?
However to eat garlic itself is allowed and is halaal. it may even have some medicinal value to a person.
